The Start

Growing up with a dad who made his living as a commercial photographer, all I ever wanted was to follow in his footsteps. Listening to his stories of adventures around the world as he photographed on far off continents, I dreamed of doing the same. In the end I attended school for photojournalism and began working shortly after graduation. I covered events and stories for small newspapers, I photographed for companies like WWE and MTV and while I enjoyed my career, it still felt like work.

With time, things change and my father rebooted his own career with a move into fine art photography and painting. In recent years we ran studios together focusing on both his fine art images and teaching photographic workshops. Then, a little over a year ago we lost my dad to cancer. After his passing, I completely lost interest in anything involving photography; for twelve months I only picked up my camera for work and never for pleasure. When the time came to make decisions regarding the future of the studios we built together, I realized that running a business was not for me. Talking it over with friends and family I found myself often saying, “I am an artist, not a CEO”; and just like that, I realized how much truth was in that statement. Once I dissolved the two companies, inspiration again began to creep into my life. I started seeing beauty all around me as if for the first time, and in managing my father’s portfolios I found ideas for compositions flooding my mind: so began my own journey into fine art photography.

The series presented on this blog pulls from nature, life, death, and oddities and reflects my attraction to such aspects of our world. All images posted are shot with natural light from a single window in a room in my home and are edited minimally in Photoshop. This project will be long term and ongoing until it is no longer enjoyable, but so far I see no end in sight. I hope you find something in my work as I have. My goal is to complete one photograph a week and post them here, and thus my start as a fine art photographer kicks off.
